Combatting intracellular pathogens using bacteriophage delivery

نویسندگان

چکیده

Intracellular pathogens reside in specialised compartments within the host cells restricting access of antibiotics. Insufficient intracellular delivery antibiotics along with several other resistance mechanisms weaken efficacy current therapies. An alternative to antibiotic therapy could be bacteriophage (phage) therapy. Although phage has been practice for a century against various bacterial infections, phages bacteria is still being explored. In this review, we will discuss advancement and challenges therapy, particularly pathogens. Finally, highlight uptake approaches overcome bacteria.

Host Delivery of Favorite Meals for Intracellular Pathogens

Pathogens grow and cause disease by exploiting the host as a rich and diverse source of food. However, it is not always an easy task to tap these food resources since the host innate immune response restricts pathogen access to crucial nutrients (“nutritional immunity”) [1]. Pathogens have acquired various mechanisms to evade host nutritional innate immunity and to trigger the host to generate ...

Control of food-borne pathogens growth using bacteriophage

Bacteriophages (also called ‘phage’) were first time isolated in early 1900’s. Until late 1930s, they were used to treat infectious diseases in different parts of the world. Improper use of phages and understandable formulations of phage particles reduced the use of phage therapy association with discovering the antibiotics. In recent years, antibiotic resistance is widespread in the world. Als...

Intracellular pathogens under attack

T he immune system provides a formidable barrier that prevents us from being overwhelmed by the numerous microbial pathogens that we encounter every day. However, many pathogens manage to escape the immune system by invading cells and replicating within them. To counter these pathogens immune cells produce a powerful cytokine called interferon-g that reprograms the invaded cells to express hund...

Evolution of intracellular pathogens.

The evolution of intracellular pathogens is considered in the context of ambiguities in basic definitions and the diversity of host-microbe interactions. Intracellular pathogenesis is a subset of a larger world of host-microbe interactions that includes amoeboid predation and endosymbiotic existence. Intracellular pathogens often reveal genome reduction. Despite the uniqueness of each host-micr...

Endoprotease-mediated intracellular protein delivery using nanocapsules.

Proteins possess distinct intracellular roles allowing them to have vast therapeutic applications. However, due to poor cellular permeability and fragility of most proteins, intracellular delivery of native, active proteins is challenging. We describe a biomimetic protein delivery vehicle which is degradable upon the digestion by furin, a ubiquitous intracellular protease, to release encapsulat...
